VARIABLE DEVIATION WEDGE -- D-635

A light deviation wedge is an exceptionally useful standard for checking the scale factors of various angular reading devices such as collimators and rotary tables, or for any application where light deviation is required through a known angle.

    Features:
    • Deviates ray from 0 to 1,000 arc seconds for instrument checkout
    • Precision microscope readout
    • Calibration within 1 arc second certified traceable to National Institute of Standards and Technology

Model D-635 Outline DrawingThe Model D-635 Variable Deviation Wedge deviates a collimated light beam from 0 through a maximum of approximately 1,000 arc seconds for 5461Å light.  Maximum deviation is calibrated at 5461Å for each instrument and is certified to within 1 arc second.  Since light dispersion depends on the wavelength used, corrective filters may be required for various colors other than 5461Å.  The direction of the maximum deviation can be made to either side of 0 deviation in an azimuth or elevation plane, depending on which of the two bases are used.  If the base containing the knob is used, light deviates in azimuth.  When the housing is rotated 90 degrees on to the other base, light deviates in an elevation plane.  Deviation variation is controlled by a knob that is geared to two counter-rotating wedges to provide an angular deviation versus an angular wedge position measurement.  Deviation in arc seconds is given by the formula:

The function  Function  is tabulated and plotted underneath.  The angular position of the wedges is read through a microscope from a degree scale mounted on one wedge, and can be set to an accuracy of 1 arc minute from the reticle minute scale.
